Mehmet Ayhan Kuzu, MD, FACS

Colorectal surgeon

I, at present, perform duties as a Professor of Surgery in the Department of General Surgery at Faculty of Medicine, Ankara University.  I am specialised in digestive system surgery, focusing on intestinal and anorectal diseases.

Education

I completed my primary and high school education at TED (Turkish Education Foundation Ankara College) between 1969 and 1980.

I studied at Ankara University Faculty of Medicine between 1980 and 1986 and graduated with the highest grade point average.

Profession

In 1986, I passed the exams with first place and started working as a research associate in the Department of General Surgery at Ankara University Faculty of Medicine.

I worked between 1991 and 1992 in the Department of General Surgery, at the Leeds University Faculty of Medicine as a General Surgery Specialist and a Research Fellow.

During my time at the Leeds University, I studied on the treatment of intestinal and stomach cancers.  I learned the surgery techniques which heal the patients with full recovery and extend the survival in the treatment of colon and rectum cancer (intestinal cancer).  In particular, I studied on the surgery techniques which protects the anus area and allows patients to naturally defecate without having to apply stoma after the surgery in the treatment of rectum cancer (intestinal cancer).  I also had trainings on laparoscopic processes which are commonly preferred these days and allow performing all these surgeries without having to apply an incision on the abdominal area.  At the end of these trainings, I received a “Laparoscopic Surgery Training Certificate” from the Leeds University.

I got entitled to the title of General Surgery Specialist in the year of 1993.

I worked at the Ankara Numune Training and Research Hospital as a specialist in the General Surgery clinic between 1994 and 1998.

I got appointed to the General Surgery Clinic of the Ankara University Faculty of Medicine in 1998.

I became Associate Professor of Surgery at Ankara University in 1999.

I worked, in the year of 2001, in six different colorectal surgery clinics (Cleveland Clinic Foundation, Mayo Clinic, Minneapolis University, Lahey Clinic, Toronto University and Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Centre) for 7 months through the scholarships I received from the American Society of Colon Rectal Surgery (ASCRS) and American College of Surgery (ACS).

I became Professor of Surgery at Ankara University in 2005.

Publications

I have 152 papers 77 of which have been internationally published so far.  I have taken on tasks to represent my country for many times as a speaker or panellist in many international congresses.

Education Projects

I have prepared 10 different training sets for surgeons working in this field which are distributed domestically and abroad.  In these training projects, I have successfully accomplished the making of comprehensive and detailed visual training materials with specialist academicians from many different countries who are well known in the surgery field in the topics of current treatment techniques of colon and rectum cancer, robotic and laparoscopic methods, colonoscopy diagnosis and treatment methods.  I also prepared a training set in the topic of Living with Stoma (diverting the flow of faeces and/or urine) for the patients and their next of kin.

Two of my studies I conducted in 1992 were considered worthy of the first price in the research project of Ankara University Faculty of Medicine.

In 1993, my study titled “Effect Of Mucosectomy on the Life Quality in Pouch-Anal Anastomosis Conducted for Ulcerative Colitis” received the best announcement award at the 5th National Colon and Rectal Diseases Congress.

In 1996, I received the first price with my study titled “Effect of Intestinal Ischemia-Reperfusion on the Pulmonary Vascular Bed” which I presented in the National Surgery Congress.

In 2000, I won the Eczacıbasi Scientific Research Medicine Encouragement Award with my research titled “Ischemia and Reperfusion affect the Vasomotor Functions in Pulmonary Vascular System”

In 2001, I won the international scholarships given by the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgery and the American College of Surgery.

In 2003, I received the “Science Award in Health Sciences” of the Ankara University.

In 2010 and 2016, I was entitled to the best scientific video award of the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgery.

Projects

I have prepared 10 different training sets for surgeons working in this field which are distributed domestically and abroad.  In these training projects, I have successfully accomplished the making of comprehensive and detailed visual training materials with specialist academicians from many different countries who are well known in the surgery field in the topics of current treatment techniques of colon and rectum cancer, robotic and laparoscopic methods, colonoscopy diagnosis and treatment methods.

In my first educational project titled “Total Mesorectal Excision – Surgery on Autonomous Neuroprotective Rectal Cancer” I prepared a training set using visual materials for the purpose of educating the surgeons in our country on the current approaches in the surgical treatment of rectum cancer (intestinal cancer).

In the second project titled “Comprehensive Step by Step Rectal Cancer Surgery” which consists of 3 CD’s, I prepared the Rectum Cancer Education Set jointly with many international scientists in the international arena.

As third project, I prepared visual training material titled “Colonoscopy Atlas”. “Colonoscopy Atlas” teaches evaluation of intestines’ inner surface, aiming colorectal cancer to become a preventable disease.

In my fourth project, I prepared the education material titled “Living with Stoma” for education of patients, whose intestines are connected to a bag in their abdominal wall during the treatment of various diseases and their next of kin.

Within the scope of my fifth project titled “Robotic Single Docking Total Mesorectal Excision”

I prepared a training set for the use of robotic surgery technique in intestinal surgeries with Dr Amjad Parvaiz under the light of current progresses.

In the latest project, I prepared the training material titled “Comprehensive Step by Step Optimised Colon Cancer Treatment” for the current progresses in the treatment of colon cancer (intestinal cancer) together with scientists from many countries.
