Dr. Mehmet Ayhan Kuzu was born in 1963 in Ankara. He completed his primary, secondary and high school education at the Turkish Education Association Ankara College between 1969-1980. After studying at Ankara University Faculty of Medicine between 1980-1986, Dr. Kuzu graduated successfully with the highest grade point average of the semester.
In the same year, he was entitled to post-graduation training as a research assistant at Ankara University Faculty of Medicine, Department of General Surgery. While he was a research assistant, he worked at the Department of General Surgery, Leeds University, Faculty of Medicine, England, for 14 months in 1991-1992, with the permission and support of Ankara University.
During his stay at the University of Leeds, total mesorectal excision and colo-anal anastomosis applied in the treatment of clinically large bowel (colon – rectum) cancers, ileal reservoir anal anastomosis (restorative proctocolectomy) applied in ulcerative colitis and familial polyposis, radical lymph dissection applied in gastric cancers and had the opportunity to learn and apply new developments in endoscopic surgery (laparoscopic and thoracoscopic). During the same period, he worked as a research assistant in the ano-rectal physiology laboratory.
He returned home in October 1992. In February 1993, he was awarded the title of General Surgery Specialist with his thesis on "Preventing the damage caused by cold ischemia in the kidney with various tissue preservatives". He worked first at Çarşamba State Hospital and then at Ankara Numune Hospital between October 1993 and April 1998 to fulfill my State Service Obligation to the Ministry of Health. In 1998, he was appointed to Ankara University Faculty of Medicine General Surgery Clinic as a Specialist. He was appointed Associate Professor in November 1999 and Professor in May 2005.
He has a total of 142 articles, 87 of which were published in international journals during his medical education and specialization.
He won the 2000 Eczacıbaşı Scientific Research and Medicine Encouragement Award for his research on 'Intestial ischemia and reperfusion affect vasomotor functions in the pulmonary vascular system'.
He won the international fellowships given by the American Colon and Rectal Surgery Association in June 2001 and by the American College of Surgeons in October 2001.
In 2003, he received the "Health Sciences Science Award" from Ankara University.
In 2010 and 2016, he was awarded the best video presentation award of the American Colon and Rectum Surgery Association, and the best article written in Disease Colon and Rectum in 2018.
"Total Mesorectal Excision" (4 hours), "Comprehensive Step by Step Rectal Cancer Surgery" (3DVD 13 hours), "Robotic Single Docking Total Mesorectal Excision" (3.5 hours), "Comprehensive Step by Step" due to the importance given to education in the scientific field He prepared 7 visual training sets: Optimised Colon Cancer Treatment” (3 DVDs, 14 hours), “Life with Stoma” (4 hours), “Colonoscopy atlas” (6 hours), “Macroscopic evaluation of resection materials” (4 hours).
In addition to these, he prepared the book titled "Those Who Give Hands to the Art of Surgery" on the history of AUTF General Surgery clinic between 1945-2022. He served as the President of the Turkish Colon and Rectum Surgery Association for two terms and assumed the duty of membership in many national and international associations.
He is still working as a professor at Ankara University Faculty of Medicine, Department of General Surgery. He is married and has two children.
